A situation has arisen at 12 Church Grove as the result of our residents finding a bone fragment during a community build, and we would very much like to keep you updated as things progress.
As you may know we have been undertaking a self-build of our play area with a team of local and student volunteers joining us over two recent weekends. Whilst digging the foundations, which meant digging into the imported building aggregate, a resident discovered a bone fragment within this aggregate level, that was set aside. It was subsequently reported to the police on the 12th April 2025. As a precaution, police have cordoned off the area to carry out standard investigations and determine whether the bone is of any concern. We are reassured by the police who have said that the fragment is non-recent. This has been reported as such by the BBC.
The riverside area remains cordoned off, while the Hub and housing continue to operate as normal. We look forward to continuing with the playground build once the police investigation has been concluded. The playground will be a public amenity and we’ll ensure our members are invited to the inauguration of the space.
We will follow this message up with updates once things are clearer. We are currently liaising with all relevant partner organisations.
Voices from the community:
Anurag, Chair of RUSS:
“We’re grateful to the police for their swift response and reassured by their view that this is likely to be a non-recent find. We’re continuing to work closely with all the relevant agencies to support their investigation and ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.”
Joel, Trustee:
“It’s important to emphasise that the bone was found in imported building material, and there is no evidence to suggest any local cause for concern. We’re pleased that the appropriate checks are being taken seriously.”
Rebecca, Resident and playground build organiser:
“This situation has shown how strong and connected our community is. Everyone is looking out for each other and offering support. It’s a real example of how co-building and community involvement can make us more resilient and responsive.”
This situation highlights the strength of our community and the importance of working collaboratively and transparently.
